Intuitive Eating Consultations
Intuitive Eating is an evidenced based self-care eating framework created by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, in 1995. It has 10 basic principles that help you tune into your body signals, break the cycle of chronic dieting, heal your relationship with food and your body, and eat in a way that honors your emotional and physical health. The Intuitive Eating model has been validated by over 100 studies to date. Interventions are behavior focused instead of restrictive or rule focused.
A lot of people ask, if Intuitive Eating is mindful eating. There is some overlap, but Intuitive Eating covers a broader range of behaviors and mindset. Hunger, fullness, and awareness are part of Intuitive Eating, but Intuitive Eating goes deeper by addressing the emotions around food, learning to reject the diet mentality, and changing your relationship with food as well as looking at body image and physical activity. With Intuitive Eating you will learn to:
- Tune into your body’s cues for hunger and fullness.
- Eat based on physical reasons rather than emotional reasons.
- Enjoy your food with unconditional permission to eat (with attunement).
- Honor your health through “gentle nutrition.”
Most people are familiar with all kinds of different diets, but they may not know much about Intuitive Eating. If you are sick of dieting, I have good news for you. Intuitive Eating is not a diet!
Dieting and other forms of restriction are likely what’s causing your problems with food. Now you might say, “But don’t I need to be on a diet to be healthy.” I’ve heard that a lot, and that’s what the diet industry wants you to believe. In reality, diets have been scientifically proven to fail by lowering metabolism and increasing preoccupation with food.
In other words, dieting makes you feel crazy around the foods you “can’t” have, and you end up eating more of those foods in the long run. When you eat those foods, you feel like you don’t have self-control and conclude that you must need to follow a diet. This increases your cravings, and the hopeless cycle continues. However, you haven’t failed, dieting has failed you!
Ninety-five percent of people that go on a diet will regain all the weight they lost. In fact, dieting has been a consistent predictor of weight gain. I always say, dieting is a highly effective way to lose a whole lot of happiness while gaining pounds. If losing happiness and gaining pounds isn’t your goal, dieting may not be for you!
If you’ve been on diets, you may have blamed yourself, but it’s the process of dieting that doesn’t work. Dieting works against the way your mind and body naturally work. Intuitive Eating works WITH your mind and body to set you up for success. Intuitive Eating allows you to enjoy your eating while improving your health. There are over 100 studies validating the benefits of Intuitive Eating.
Many of my clients come to me with the desire to lose weight. We can talk about your weight concerns, but it won’t be the focus of the program. Focusing too much on weight can undermine the process of becoming an intuitive eater, so we will put your weight loss goals on the back burner while we focus on your health and habits. Because everyone’s genetic make-up and metabolism is different, people are healthy at a variety of sizes. Intuitive Eating helps your body settle into a natural weight that’s right for you.
Yes, we can combine the Intuitive Eating approach with my Nutrition Therapy service. We will apply the principles of Intuitive Eating while keeping in mind any dietary needs you have with your condition. Prior to opening my practice, I provided nutrition therapy for hundreds of clients with chronic conditions as an outpatient hospital dietitian.
Behavior change takes time. When you’ve been hearing diet messages for years, it can take a lot support and commitment to become an intuitive eater and reap the benefits.
With that said, the amount of appointments needed can vary greatly between individuals. You can schedule as many or as few sessions as you need. Some individuals only need a few appointments to reap the benefits while others may need to meet for several months. Ultimately, the number of appointments and how often we meet is up to you.
Initial consults are $99 (60-75 minutes) and follow-ups are $75 (45-60 minutes).
I accept cash, check, credit/debit cards, and HSA/HRA cards. I am out of network with insurance companies; however, I am happy to provide you with a superbill (summary of services) after your appointment for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Please let me know prior to your appointment if you would like to receive a superbill.
While there is a cost associated with appointments, Intuitive Eating will likely save you money in the future. With Intuitive Eating you will finally be able to make peace with food, end food worry, and stop spending money on all those other programs that haven’t worked for you.
